About St. Matthew

stmatt675Our Mission at St. Matthew Lutheran Church

St. Matthew Lutheran Church is a fellowship of Christian believers called to grow in Christ, share the Gospel,  serve God’s people.

What We Believe

  • We believe that we are made right with God and with one another by grace alone (a free gift) in Jesus Christ and not by any action of our own.
  • This grace comes to us through means chiefly the Word of God and the Sacraments (baptism and communion).
  • As Jesus came as one of us to give himself away, all the way to death, so we are called to give ourselves away in service to others and to find ourselves in losing ourselves.
  • This church confesses the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • This church confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe.

Pastor Robert Rasmus

Pastor Bob Rasmus, Pentecost 2013

Pastor Robert Rasmus is the Lead Pastor at St. Matthew. He began his ministry here in January of 2001 after serving a congregation in Orange, TX. He grew up in North Dakota where he tried lutefisk on several occasions, but has suffered only mild post-traumatic stress as a result.

Pastor Rasmus graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1996 and was ordained into the ministry of word and sacrament on July 21, 1996. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in 1982. Prior to entering the ministry he served as a medic in the U.S. Army, was the news director of a radio station, served as a congressional press secretary in Washington D.C., and worked as a politics and public affairs reporter with a state radio network in Iowa. Pastor Rasmus was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served as a Reserve chaplain until separating service as a Captain in 2002. In his early days, he also enjoyed a brief stint as a blackjack dealer.

He is married to Ann Schneider, whom he met at the seminary, in 1996. They have one daughter, Sophie Grace, who is, by all accounts, the most beautiful child ever born.

Pastor Maggie Falenschek

Pastor Bob Rasmus, Pentecost 2013

Pastor Maggie Falenschek serves as the Pastor for Youth and Family Ministries at St. Matthew. She comes to St. Matthew from California where she completed her Master of Divinity degree and served congregations in Palo Alto and San Francisco. Though she has made the transition from the Silicon Valley to the Silicon Prairie, Maggie is a Minnesota girl at heart having grown up and earning her undergraduate degree in Moorhead, MN.

Pastor Maggie graduated from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA on May 23rd, 2015 and was ordained into the ministry of word and sacrament on May 24th, 2015. She received her Bachelor of Arts in 2011 from Concordia College, where she studied Religion with an emphasis in Youth and Family Ministry. Maggie has served in many different ministry contexts including several youth and family organizations, campus ministry, congregational community organizing, and chaplaincy for survivors of domestic violence. She is passionate about people, service, social justice, and not taking herself too seriously.

Pastor Maggie lives in Champaign with her spouse Nikoli, who is also a pastor, and their furry child Cee Lo (a chubby pug-beagle mix). She enjoys traveling, baking, hiking, biking, and running abnormally long distances.

Office Coordinator Gayla Pellum

Gayla Fiedler Pellum, office coordinator, has been with St. Matthew Lutheran Church since June 2006. She received her Graphics Design degree from Parkland College in 1999 after being in banking for over 20 years. Gayla and her husband, Dan, are lifelong “townies.” They have three terrific sons & daughters-in-law and six grandchildren who are the light of their lives.
