Welcome Visitors

“I am creating something new…”  Isaiah, 43: 19

Premiering a Jazz Worship Service: On Sunday, August 14 at the 9:30 am service, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Urbana, is dipping a toe in the water of expanding the way we pray, hear the Word of God and sense the movement of the Spirit by using jazz in Worship.

“Every… [person] prays in … [their] own language, and there is no language that God does not understand.” (Duke Ellington, 1965)

We will be supporting young musicians and vocalists from Champaign-Urbana to have a way to share their music with us. David McEathron, Jazz Performance, UIUC, is bringing a group of young musicians and vocalists from the UIUC/School of Music and the Champaign/Urbana community to St. Matthew Lutheran Church for our Sunday Worship. Won’t you join us and experience the stirring of the Spirit in the familiar and the new? Bring a friend. Share a new way of experiencing God at work in this music and all music, at this time and all times, everywhere.

We believe that Christ calls us to welcome everyone. We look forward to seeing you in our church, whether it is the first time you have visited a Christian congregation or if you have been a regular churchgoer for years.

As you visit, we welcome any questions you may have about our services, our faith or our congregation. While it is our hope that every interested visitor find St. Matthew to be a place where they feel called, it is our greatest wish that every person find a home in Christ, so you will not feel pressure to join us – just a warm invitation to do so.

Feel free to explore the rest of this site for more information about our congregation and our activities. If you have any questions, please call or email us.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Interested in Joining?

We hope that visitors will find St. Matthew to be a place that they can come to participate as full members.

We generally receive new members twice a year, in the spring and fall. If you are interested in membership or if you have questions about membership you are invited to speak with a pastor, contact the church office, or indicate your preference on the welcome sheets handed out during worship.

Whether or not you choose to join at this time, you are always welcome to worship at St. Matthew and to participate in any of the congregation’s activities.
